Winter Teeth Care Tips

Oral health is important at any time of the year, however during the winter it is especially important due to the cold climate. A variety of factors including dryness, cold temperatures and wind can take a toll on your health. This puts you at risk for developing common dental problems. Check out these tips in order to keep your mouth healthy and clean this winter.

In order to best defend your mouth and body from disease:

  • Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day
  • Floss your teeth daily
  • Replace your toothbrush at least every three to four months (and immediately after you get over a sickness)
  • Get your teeth cleaned by your dentist twice a year
  • Visit your dentist with any concerns or odd symptoms

It is especially important during the colder months to be aware of these factors that could impact your mouth health.

Canker sores not only are a pain in the mouth but also seem to show up at the worst times. Keep your mouth canker sore free by avoiding overly acidic or spicy foods. If you have unfortunate luck and do get one, swishing with warm salt water should do the trick to get rid of it.

When the heat is running at home, in the office and at school dry mouth and chapped lips are inevitable. A few tips to keep in mind are running a humidifier at night to increase the humidity in the air, drinking plenty of water and wearing a hydrating lip balm at night and one with SPF during the day.

Winter increases our chances of getting sick. Between the cold weather and holiday events germs are being spread. With a weakened immune system, gums are more susceptible to infection and inflammation so be sure to wash your hands whenever possible and keep your hands out of your mouth.

When the wind is bitterly cold it can leave your teeth chattering and sensitive. To help ease this pain consider wearing a scarf to protect yourself from the elements or use a toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth.

Follow these tips and you will be sure to survive the cold month ahead. Also, keep in mind winter is the perfect time to schedule your semi-annual teeth cleaning.
