The holiday season is a time where many indulge...but don't forget about cavities. Keep reading for the best tips on keeping your teeth cavity free while still enjoying all your favorite things!
Everything in moderation
Everyone has heard this phrase, but not all of us follow it. Anytime you eat something less than healthy balance it with something that is healthy. Set yourself up for success and have easy to grab, healthy snacks on hand. Whether that be a piece of fruit, cut up vegetables, mixed nuts, hard boiled eggs or a piece of cheese it will make a healthy decision easier to make when it's ready to go!
The Main Food Groups
As Buddy the Elf says, “We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.” Do not take Buddy's advice when it comes to the four main food groups. These ooey gooey treats are sure to get stuck in your teeth or stay on your teeth and could potentially cause cavities. If you do indulge, be sure to rinse with water and brush and floss as soon as you can. Another important note is to try to incorporate as many fruits, vegetables, grains and dairy into as many meals as you can.
Limiting alcohol intake
While this may be difficult with all the merriment going on it's important to take this into consideration when imbibing. Too much alcohol could dry out your mouth so be sure to drink enough water. If you do decide to drink, consider red wine which has been shown to reduce the amount of bad bacteria on teeth.
Between cakes, cookies, and gingerbread there is a ton of starchy treats to choose from this holiday season! These treats often get trapped in teeth and could cause pesky plaque. Take extra care with more detailed flossing after eating.
As always, brushing your teeth at least twice per day and especially after a meal filled with less than healthy food.
Schedule your semi-annual dentist right after the holiday season in early January. After you're done being holly and jolly head into your favorite dentist's office to ensure you are starting the year off with clean teeth!
